BIOGRAPHY OF ANSTER TUCKER

"Anster", ANSTRUTHER PAVY TUCKER

Born 12 October 1891 in Langhorne Creek, South Australia.

Son of John TUCKER and "Louise" Sarah Louise Jane PAVY.

Named Anstruther after the village of the same name in Fife, Scotland and his middle name was his mother's maiden surname

Shifted with his parents and two brothers from South Australia to Western Australia in 1901 [Date: 27-Oct-1939]

Educated at Scotch College in the Perth suburb of Claremont.


In 1916 he was working as a Surveyors Assistant and residing at 90 Coghlan Road in the Perth suburb of Subiaco.
Enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 12 February 1916.
He had previously been rejected as unfit for service on the grounds of his teeth.
On enlistment he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed 143 pounds, and had grey eyes, brown hair and a dark complexion
Gave his next of kin as his father John TUCKER, whose address was also 90 Coghlan Road in the Perth suburb of Subiaco
At the Blackboy Hill military camp on 14 September 1916 he was appointed to the 5th Reinforcements of the 51st Battalion
Embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia for active service abroad on the H.M.A.T. A66 Uganda on 20 September 1916
Disembarked in Plymouth, England on 15 November 1916 and on 12 December proceeded to France on the S.S. Arundel
Private 2523 in the Australian Imperial Force's 51st Battalion in France during the First World War
Hospitalised in France on 15 April 1917 with a septic foot, and on 22 April 1917 was returned to England on a hospital ship
After treatment in England he returned to France on 10 January 1918, and rejoined the 51st Battalion on 18 January 1918
He was appointed Lance Corporal in France on 15 May 1918, and promoted to Corporal on 21 October 1918
Granted leave with pay from 11 June 1918 to 11 September 1918 to work for engineer and surveyor Owen BAINES
Admitted to the 2nd Scottish General Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland with influenza on 25 October 1918, while on leave
Embarked London, England on the Pakeha and disembarked in Fremantle, Western Australia on 16 November 1919
Discharged from the Australian Imperial Force on 13 December 1919; received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Surveyor on the Mount Hawthorn reservoir in Perth. Also worked on projects to do with Hyde Park, Perth sewerage, Swan River, Wellington Street and Rokeby Road drainage.
Farmer of Yarra Yarra Farm in Carnamah 1920-1952.
Soldier Settler on 784 acres of farmland on the Repatriation Department's Yarra Yarra Estate in Carnamah.
His 784 acres was Victoria Location 6925 situated on the west side of the railway line between Carnamah and Winchester.

In 1920 and early 1921 farmed in partnership with L. Roy TIMMINGS, who had settled on the adjacent Victoria Location 6926
Himself and Roy lived in a stone cottage on his farm, which had years earlier been the home of the MACPHERSON family
During harvest a grass seed entered Roy's ear, which resulted in his death at the age of 29 years on 20 January 1921 [by: 11-Mar-1921]
Roy's farmland in Carnamah was inherited and owned by his mother until she sold it to Reginald M. DIAMOND in 1923.

Farmed in Carnamah in partnership with "Reg" Reginald M. DIAMOND as "Diamond & Tucker" from 1923 to 1927.
They farmed their collective 2,127 acres - his 754 acre Victoria Location 6925 and Reg's 1,343 acre Victoria Location 6926
By 1925 they had obtained the telephone, and were telephone number Carnamah-9N
Following his marriage in 1926 and Reg's in 1927 they dissolved their partnership and farmed their respective farmland.

Married "Dorrie" Victoria Doris MCNAMARA in Moora on 24 June 1926.
Met Dorrie when she was in Carnamah visiting her brother Harry, who was manager and part owner of the Carnamah Hotel.
In about 1925 at a local football match in pouring rain he was knocked, fell and broke his leg right in front of Dorrie
She rushed out with her umbrella to shelter him, and so began a friendship they eventually led to their marriage.

Member of the Carnamah Football Club - was Captain in 1921 and 1926 [6-May-1921] [21-Aug-1926].
Motored to Moora with Donald MACPHERSON to attend the Race Meeting in Moora on Tuesday 14 March 1922 [17-Mar-1922].
In September 1924 he broke his shoulder after the horse he was riding stumbled and threw him [5-Sep-1924].
At the Carnamah Football Club's Grand Ball held on 30 April 1927 he was announced the Club's Best All Round Player [7-May-1927].
In October 1928 purchased an 8 foot Monitor windmill from local agent Charles ROBERTSON [3-Nov-1928].
Member of the Carnamah Rifle Club in 1928 [10-Mar-1928].
Telephone number Carnamah-9B from 1928 to 1931, when he had the telephone disconnected.
Awarded 2nd prize for Three Fat Lambs exhibited at the Carnamah District Agricultural Society's Annual Show in 1929 [28-Sep-1929].
Sold four bales of wool at 11d. per pound through Westralian Farmers Ltd at the Perth Wool Sale on 18 October 1929 [19-Oct-1929].
Had an account with Carnamah blacksmith, wheelwright and motor mechanics Henry Parkin & Son from the 1920s to the 1940s.
Member of Carnamah's branch of the Primary Producers' Association - was Chairman in 1930 [18-Oct-1930].
In September 1930 he had a visit in Carnamah from his parents [13-Sep-1930].
Pallbearer at the funeral of 11 month old Thomas Brian SOMERS of Carnamah at the Winchester Cemetery on 7 December 1931.
Committee Member 1931-1952 and Financial Member 1932-1958 of the Carnamah District Agricultural Society [25-Apr-1931].
In 1932 was the owner of a Chevrolet car with license plate CA-388 [12-Nov-1932].
Made a donation to the Carnamah branch of the Country Women's Association in 1932 to help them purchase premises [29-Jul-1932].
Patron of the Carnamah Football Club in 1933, 1934 and 1935 [21-Jul-1933, 20-Apr-1934, 19-Apr-1935]
Represented Carnamah at meetings of the North Midlands Football Association in 1933 and 1934 [21-Jul-1933, 13-Apr-1934]

Steward in Charge of the Vegetable section at the Carnamah District Agricultural Society's Annual Shows from 1933 to 1947.

In August 1934 purchased a new 10-disc Sundercut from the Sunshine Agency in Carnamah [31-Aug-1934].
One day while he and his family were on holidays his workman fixed the attachment to poison the rabbits to the back of his cart
The poison was a mixture of bran and pollard and as the wheel turned it dobbed little baits out
His workman failed to clean the cart down afterwards and a couple of cows licked the spilt bait on the spring cart
The local vet came out, while he was still away, and believed it was the feed so the cows were killed and his haystack burnt.
