On the 28 May 1927 Michael wrote to Base Records stating that he had lost all his possessions including his medals in a bushfire which has swept through destroying every piece of his belongings. He also enclosed 14/11 the cost of replacement medals and added that he had searched through the debris of his house in hope that he could find the medal, this proved fruitless
