Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Trooper Norman Gould Kelly (Service No:3174) enlisted in the AIF on 31 October 1916 with 2nd Depot Battalion and was posted to 9th Light Horse Regiment. Attached to 3rd Light Horse regiment on 8 February 1917, Trooper Kelly embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Suez on board RMS Kamala and served with 3rd Light Horse Regiment in Egypt, Palestine and Syria. Trooper Kelly was hospitalised for a GSW to his hand in Palestine in 1917 and in 1918 with chronic bronchitis. Embarking from Suez on 2 January 1919 for South Australia on board HT Aneas, Trooper Kelly was attached to 3rd Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 4 April 1919.

Born in Kapunda, South Australia in 1888, Norman was the eldest of nine children of John (aka JG) Gould Kelly (b1861 at One Tree Hill, Playford, South Australia) and his first wife Ada Caroline Pearce (b1869 in Kapunda, South Australia). JG was a Farmer/Grazier at Giles Corner in 1887 when he married Ada (daughter of the Mayor of Kapunda and local MP). JG and Ada settled at Giles Corner where they raised their family and JG was a Grazier, and involved in the local community. He was sponsor of the Giles Corner Cricket Club and held many public positions, including Councillor for eight years in the Stockport District Council, Trustee of the Tarlee Institute, President and Trustee of the Wooroora Agricultural Society and Justice of the Peace. Following Ada's death in 1901, JG remarried.

Norman was a Grazier at Giles Corner when he enlisted in the AIF, and in 1919 in Adelaide, South Australia he married Gwendoline Hocking (b1894 in Adelaide, South Australia). Norman and Gwendoline lived in Riverton, Teal Flat and Orroroo where they raised their family. Norman died in 1925 and Gendoline in 1974.
