Biography contributed by Robert Wight

3847 Private (Pte) Thomas James Jenkin, 21st Battalion was from Joyces Creek, near Maldon, Victoria.

A 41 year old carpenter who had previously served as a missionary in New Guinea prior to enlisting on 10 August 1915, he embarked for overseas service with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Warilda (A69) on 8 February 1916.

After disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to France in March and became a stretcher bearer at his own request.

He was killed in action on 26 August 1916 while carrying a wounded man near Mouquet Farm.

His name was published in appreciation by the Army Corps Commander for good services rendered at Pozieres. Originally buried south west of Courcelette, after the war his remains were removed to Serre Road Cemetery No1, Beaumont Hamel, France.
