Private Hetherington Informant Report for Missing in Action
Private Lindsay Hetherington was in the same NSW 45th Battalion as my Great Uncle Private Charles Hicks 2188. They went over the Messines Ridge, Belgium beside each other on 7/6/1917.
Private Hetherington wrote an Informant report stating "I knew Hicks very well; called him "Tony". We lived in the same hut. He went over the big stunt at Messines beside me, and was reported killed, but I was hit myself and did not see him." This extract is from Private Hetherington's report on the Australian War Memorial website, Australian Red Cross Society Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau files, 1914-18 War 1DRL/0428 for Private Charles Hicks 2188.
Included in this file are five witness statements from WWI AIF 45th Battalion, D Company soldiers who fought in the 7th June 1917 Messines Ridge battle that Private Lindsay Hetherington was wounded in.
In Lance Corporal T Thomas 4630's report he stated "They had reached the German lines when Hicks was killed."
Private Harold Kilby 2752's report states "I was told by Sgt. Dann, 45th Battn. D Coy. 13th Pltn. killed since that Pte. Chas Hicks 45th Battn. D Coy. 13th Pltn. L/G,. was killed instantaneously on my birthday, June 7th in an attack on Messines. I was not there myself but Pte. Claney 45th Battn. D Coy. 13th Pltn. L/G., also Pte. Collier 45th Battn. D Coy. 13th Pltn. were with him. We were four great friends together. I think ground was held." May they all rest in peace. Lest We Forget.
I have looked at War records and could not find a Pte. Claney but think this must be a Pte. Leo Daniel Clancy 2160.
Reading some of the records it is evident that there is a strong sense of unity and friendship among these young soldiers who were very brave to volunteer to the WWI cause.
