Sgt William Archibald CHERRY
Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917, Zonnebeke
William Cherry, a 24-year-old farm worker from Tasmania, enlisted in August 1914 He got badly injured at Gallipoli in 1915. A GSW to the leg and it took months before he was allowed to leave the hospital in Alexandria.
After his sick leave, he was transferred to the 12th Battalion in Europe and was promoted to sergeant.
On the night of 6 October 7, 1917, William's battalion was in the front line on the Broodseinde ridge. The 11th and 12th battalion executed a raid on German positions in Celtic Wood. The raid was a success. Only two men were wounded. But the German retribution did not wait and the positions of the 12th Battalion were placed under barrage. William Cherry leaves life during this barrage and is buried near Remus Wood. Read William's story: https://archives.passchendaele.be/nl/soldier/1699
