The great-great grandnephew of Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson and hero of the Battle of Trafalgar, Lt.-Col. Hon. Charles Sebastian Joseph Horatio Nelson was born in Leicestershire, England on 26 April 1896.
He was the son of Hon. Edward Agar Horatio Nelson, 5th Earl Nelson of Trafalgar and of Merton and Geraldine Cave, and was educated at Stonyhurst College, Blackburn, Lancashire, England.
Charles Nelson fought in the First World War in the Australian Imperial Force under the alias Joseph Cooke, using his fiancee's surname to avoid detection after earlier deserting from the militia. He was discharged as medically unfit after contracting chronic dysentry at Gallipoli.
Two brothers, Albert (6th Earl Nelson) and Henry (7th Earl Nelson) also served in the Australian Imperial Force during the war.
Subsequently, he gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Pioneer Corps and fought in the Second World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.
He married Kathleen Cooke on 29 November 1916. They had two children,Mary Teresa Muriel Nelson (1917-1985) and James Berkeley Horatio Nelson (1924-1958). James Nelson served with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment during the Korean War suffering severe wounds and was blinded.
Charles Sebastian Joseph Horatio Nelson died in Ireland on 18 January 1964 at the age of 67 years.
