Biography

Tertius Percy Montgomery MORTYN was born on 20th March, 1871 in  Brighton, Tasmania

His parents were Frederick William MORTYN and Eliza Jane BLACKLOW

He first joined the Australian Army and served in the 3rd Battalion, Australian Commonwealth Horse in the Boer War ( E Company)

His unit consisted of 615 Men - subunits - 5 Mounted Rifle Squadrons. The Commanding Officer was Lieutenant Colonel E T Wallack

They left for South Africa on 8th April, 1902 on the ships Manhattan and Englishman.  None of them were killed or died of wounds but nine died of other causes.   Tertius returned to Australia on the 8th August. 1902 on ship Drayton Grange

On 27th March, 1916 he enlisted with the Australian Army again for World War 2 - Unit embarked from Hobart on board HMAT Berrima on 1st July 1916 - he was with the 40th Battalion (D Company)

He returned to Australia on 13th March, 1918 for family reasons & was discharged on 29th June, 1918 

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Tertius died on 18th June 1939 at his residence "Rodbourne" Black Brush, Tasmania - he is buried in St Marks Anglican Church Cemetery, Pontville, Tasmania

Mr. T MORTYN - Funeral at Pontville

The funeral of Mr. Tertius Mortyn took place in St Marks Anglican Church Cemetery, Pontville.  The chief mourners were his brother, Mr. Louis Mortyn, The Rev. M . Mortyn (nephew) and other nephews.  Services at Mr. Mortyns late residence Rodbourne, St Marks Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. C. E. Mitchell.  Mr. Mortyn served in the 40th Battalion in the Great War and also fought in the South African War   Members of the Brighton & Green Ponds sub branch of the Returned Sailors & Soldiers League attended the funeral.

MORTYN.- Passed peacefully away on June 18, 1939 at his residence, Rodbourne, Black Brush.  Tertius P M Mortyn, third son of the late Frederick and E. J. Mortyn aged 68 years.   Late 40th Battalion A.I.F. and South African Forces.

The Funeral of the late Mr. Tertius P. M. Mortyn will arrive at St Marks Church & Cemetery, Pontville on Wednesday this day at 3pm.
