Mums Letter
Hubert Crowe, known within the family as "Dandy", enlisted twice. His first enlistment was cut short when his mother wrote a letter to the CO of the 3rd Signalling School at Casula, NSW, declaring Hubert to be "underage". Johanna Crowe (nee Flanagan), in her letter, also stated that 'Dandy' had run off with the "Carmichael show". A reference to a recruiting drive that occurred in 1917.
However, when we examine the first Attestation signed in Aug 1915, we see that both parents, David and Johanna signed to say he could enlist in 1915. Comparing the signature on the document from 1915 to the letter sent to the training establishment, it would appear that Johanna did, in fact, sign both documents.
Today, one can only wonder at what was going through Johanna Crowe's mind, however it is worth noting that on the 3rd of Aug 1915, Johanna's first cousin, 255, Trooper Flanagan, Gordon, was KIA at Gallipoli. There would have been a time delay in notifications of casualties from the front, and this may account in some part, to the delay of approximately 98 days from 1st Attestation until withdrawal of consent.
