Son of Walter Samuel Vaughan and Christina Penberthy Vaughan nee  of the Queensland Hotel, Mackay, QLD. Brother of Samuel Thomas Vaughan who returned to Australia on 11 February 1919 having served with the 15th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 31 August 1916 aboard NZHS Mararna disembarking 17 October 1916
