Roy Desmond Picton ABELL was born under the surname JOHNS in 1899 in Broken Hill NSW
His mother was Elizabeth Ann JOHNS who later married Walter Henry GUNN on 4th September 1915 in St Lukes Church Adelaide
He enlisted on 19th October 1917 with the Railway Unit & Reinforcements and Special Draft - Unit embarked from Melbourne on 9th November 1917 on the ship HMAT Port Sydney. He returned to Australia in 1919 - He received the Briish War Medal & the Victory Medal
Roy married Ida May KERSLAKE on 17th January 1922 in Chalmers Church, Adelaide - Second marriage to Retha Louise HAWKE (date unknown) Retha died 21st March, 1996
Roy died on 11th July, 1972 aged 73 years at Daw Park SA
He is buried in Centennial Park Cemetery Drk. gardens, Path 24, Plot 1708
His son Douglas Roy ABELL was a pilot officer in the RAAF in WW2 and died 6th October, 1944 - buried Hamburg Cemetery
