Meritorious Service Medal. London Gazette 19/3/1918.
Citation: At 11:15 am, on Jan 9th, 1918, a bomb was dropped from a hostile aeroplane on a salvage ammunition dump at Zuave siding near Ypres immediately causing a big explosion which resulted in about 100 casualties, of which between 40 and 50 were fatal.

CSM Wallace together with Sjt Spencer and Spr Jackson ran immediately to the scene with all available dressings. They removed and dressed all the casualties then proceeded to help to extinguish the fire risking the recurrence of explosions of the cordite. Their actions throughout the whole time being a dine example of courage and devotion to duty.
Additional pension of 6d per day is not recommended.
Philip Laurence Jackson was born in Sale, Gippsland, Victoria, Australia about 1898, his father died shortly after his birth. When the Great War broke out, he was working and residing in Fremantle, Western Australia as a clerk.
Being under 21 years of age he obtained his mothers permission to enlist into the AIF on the 10/7/1916. He was assigned to the 7th Reinforcements 51st Battalion. He departed Australia bound for England on 9/11/1916 landing on 10/1/1917.
After further training he deployed to France on 7/6/1917 and was posted to the 59th Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company (Renumbered 5th Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company March 1918. He was serving with the unit when he was awarded his MSM for bravery.
He survived the war to return to Australia on 23/7/1919 for discharge 28/11/1919. He died in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea in October 1934.
