Son of Joseph Victor Ulrich and Clara Ulrich nee Young of Mary Street, Fremantle, WA. Brother of Frank Ulrich who was killed in action on 6 August 1915 while serving with the 11th Battalion and is buried in the Shell Green Cemetery, Plot 11, Row I, Grave 44
Prior to enlisted he had been an apprentice Carpenter with J. Ferguson
Commenced return to Australia on 22 November 1919 aboard HT Aeneas disembarking on 1 January 1919
