Son of Christoff Friedrich Uhlman and Margaret Uhlmann nee Gibson of Burpengarry, QLD. Brother of David Howard Uhlmann who returned to Australia on 8 March 1919 having served with the 4th Machine Gun Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 4 January 1919 aboard HT Morvada disembarking on 20 February 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane arrivnig the on 1 March 1919
