Serving as George Carruthers, he was born and raised in Blackwood, Victoria. George was working as a butcher and a miner in Queenstown, Tasmania, when he enlisted at Claremont during late 1916. He was assigned to the all Tasmanian 40th Battalion.
George died during an advance by the 40th Battalion when he was badly hit in the legs on the 28 March 1918. His father had passed away only a few months before so his mother, Alice Eliza Carruthers, received his medals, personal possessions and war gratuity.
