Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 5th October 1917, Private George Bebbington, referred to as Skinny and Jock, 4th Battalion (Lewis Machine Gun Section, Reg No-6959), wharf labourer (Carrington Dyke, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from 18 Railway Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was Killed in Action by an enemy high explosive artillery shell, Battle of Broodseinde, age 29.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 24th February 1888 to John (died 16.1.1931, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 71 years, 10 months) of 329 Hunter Street, Newcastle, New South Wales (1920) and 73 Charles Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., and Mary Ellen Bebbington nee Hughes (died 23.7.1939, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, name not inscribed on headstone plaque, no death notice located) of 329 Hunter Street, Newcastle, New South Wales (1920) and 73 Charles Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., George enlisted on the 11th October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.
Reported Wounded in Action 4.10.1917 (Broodseinde Ridge).
Reported Wounded & Missing 4.10.1917.
Reported Killed in Action 16.3.1918.
Mr. Bebbington is resting at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot XXXIII Row F Grave 8.

George’s name has been inscribed on the Book of Gold, Newcastle Wharf Labourers Union Roll of Honour, Cooks Hill St. John's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Gardner Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at the memorialised Bebbington gravesite in remembrance of George’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 2-150. 74.
See 'documents' for a letter written on the 16th October 1917 by William Aubrey, 4th Battalion, Reg No-6949, accountant from Maitland Street, Stockton, New South Wales and 67 Hereford Street, Stockton, N.S.W., ashes interred at Sandgate Cemetery on the 5th February 1966, age 74. Name not inscribed on headstone, wooden cross erected at the gravesite on Anzac Day 2015.
