Military Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches near DERNANCOURT, South West of ALBERT, on the night of June 30th /July 1st 1918. Sergeant NEWLANDS was in charge of the Right party and showed great courage and leadership. He rushed the trench when the barrage lifted, and engaged in a hand to hand conflict with two of the enemy in a dugout. Both Germans were armed with bayonets and stick grenades and they put up a strenuous fight until Sergeant NEWLANDS inflicted a bayonet wound in one of them, and both then surrendered. This N.C.O. then organised a party of stretcher bearers to carry in our wounded, and himself assisted in carrying, making three trips to and from the enemy trench.'
