George Henry BRUCE, (Service Number 3026) was born in 1893 and commenced as a probationer in the Orange District in the Traffic Branch in 1910. He had progressed to porter, still in the same district, when in 1915 he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces.
He travelled through Egypt to Gallipoli where he became seriously ill with enteric fever and was evacuated to Malta and admitted to St Andrew’s Hospital. His condition became so debilitated that he was returned to Australia for recuperation, by the Hospital Ship ‘Esquibo’ to Suez and then by the ‘Nestor’.
Once fit again he returned to France, where he was killed in action on 7 February 1917.
