Born in and resident at Semaphore South Australia, William Henry Matthews  was the son of Mrs Marie Matthews, of Harris Street, Semaphore, South Australia
At enlistment in January 1915, he was listed as 34 years of age, and a labourer.
We was enlisted into the 3rd reinforcements of the 12th Battalion.

He returned to Australia 5 July 1915
