John (‘Jock’) Menzies became Registered Player Number 0408 at VFA club Port Melbourne in 1909 and went on to play in 10 senior games. He later enlisted with the AIF at the age of just under 27 on 1 October 1914. He survived the war but was wounded twice with the second gunshot wound to his arm being severe and keeping him hospitalized for a lengthy period. He returned to duty on 30 May 1916 and was later discharged on 5 March 1919.
