Obituary - Trove

BUGLER C. G. BREADNER

The death in reported of Bugler C. G. Breadner, of Bowral, who was previously reported dangerously ill. We understand that Bugler Breadner was on active service at Gallipoli, and was invalided to England. On recovering from this illness, he was sent to France, where he spent a couple of months in the trenches. While there he contracted a dangerous illness, from which be never recovered.

The deceased, who was only a young man, bore an excellent character, and was much esteemed. He was employed at one time by Mr. A. K. Marshall (late storekeeper of Bowral), where he earned the reputation at being steady and reliable. His mother resides at Manchester (England), his father having died since the bugler's enlistment.

From Ian Fletcher, Australia and NZ in WWI

Bugler Cecil Gordon Breadner, 17th Battalion A.I.F., died in an Isolation Hospital at Etaples, France. of Cerebro Spinal fever, he was aged 18, now rests in Etaples military Cemetery

when he joined up on the 19th March 1915 he stated his age as 19years and 1 month, but when he died on the 19th April 1916 his real age was 18, he had served with the 17th in Gallipoli and I suspect he was one of the 16 boys of the average age of sixteen who had been enlisted as Buglers, several of these lads went through every campaign with the 17th as private soldiers, being absorbed into the platoons when the use of buglers was discontinued about the time the battalion embarked for Gallipoli

17th Battalion 'Not Forgotten'
