Final ripple from a big sporting splash of long ago lapped life's pool last week with the death of Thomas Charles ("Tommy") Adrian, at 55. Sydney went wild with delight 30-odd years ago when Adrian trounced Duke Kahanamoku at the Domain baths over 440 yards. It was the Duke's first visit, and up till then he had beaten all the locals out of sight over shorter distances.
Adrian later went to the Olympic Games as Charlton's trainer.
