489 Trooper John Joseph White was born and raised in Greymouth, New Zealand. He was working as a bridge carpenter in Queensland when the War broke out, and enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force as a Private with the 9th Infantry Battalion. He landed at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915, and was shot in the shoulder two months later and evacuated wounded to Egypt.
After the withdraw from the Gallipoli Peninsular John transferred to the 1st ANZAC Battalion of the Imperial Camel Corps during January 1916. He fought against the Turks in the Sinai Desert and up into Palestine. He died on 19 April 1917 during the Battle of Gaza, and his remains could not be recovered.
He lost three brothers in WW1, all serving with New Zealand Forces.
7/1157 Private Thomas Patrick White, NZEF Canterbury Regiment, killed in action 17 May 1916. Age 22.
10/4144 Private Daniel Patrick White, NZEF Wellington Regiment, killed in action 16 September 1916. Age 27.
11/2003 Corporal William White, NZEF Canterbury Regiment, killed in action 26 November 1917. Age 21.
