According to his enlistment papers, Joseph, born in England, had served for 12 years in the Worcester Regiment. He was married to Alice and living in Ipswich, Queensland at this time, with one child.
He was wounded in action on the 4 November 1917, only a few months after joining the 9th Battalion in Belgium. He died in the 2nd Australian Field Ambulance the same day.
