Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

98 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 9th December 1923, Private George Kedwell, (served as LEIGH-D'arcy), 49th Battalion (Reg No-3817), butcher from First Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 41. ANGLICAN 1-80. 69.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales about 1882 to Alfred E and Elizabeth Kedwell, George enlisted September 1915 with the 9th Battalion at Lismore, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 3.9.1916 (GSW leg, severe), 5.4.1918 (GSW right jaw, shoulder, right arm).  Reported wounded 2nd occasion, as LEIGH.
Admitted to hospital 26.12.1917 (trench fever).

George was invalided home January 1919, not being discharged until the 14th August 1920. Welcomed home and presentation to George by the Boolaroo Soldiers' Farewell and Reception Committee at the Sulphide Hall, Boolaroo.

Mr. Kedwell’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 14th December 1916, 14 names originally inscribed, 148 names now inscribed with photos) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the Newcastle & Northern District Branch Meat Workers' Union Honour Roll or the Weston Independent Order of Rechabites Tent No. 94 Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies on George’s brown granite headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Service record does not state Died after Discharge.
Lest We Forget.
