Our dear brother Frank Kelly
"Might we draw your attention to the death of our dear brother, Private Frank Kelly of Rockhampton." This was the opening line of Doris and Ruby Kelly’s beautifully hand-written letter to the military authorities enquiring about the death of their brother. They received a reply saying that they would get more information as it came to hand. I doubt that it ever did. The War Diary of the 42nd Battalion for 6 April 1916 simply notes, “1 OR (other rank) killed, 1 OR wounded.” At the time the 42nd Battalion was in the frontline trenches at Ploegsteert and snipers had been active, so he was possibly killed by a German sniper. I took this photo when we stopped at Ploegsteert for lunch during our tour in April 2024 as the flowers were just starting to bloom. Cede Nullis Frank Kelly.
