Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Francis Percy FETHERSTONHAUGH and Eva Madeline Ffloyd nee CHOMLEY, "Milton" 14 Aphrasia Street, Newtown, Geelong, Vic.

Francis, known to his family as Cuthbert, enlisted on 4 February 1918 at the age of 18 and 7 months with the written permission of his parents.  Cuthbert listed his occupation as a student of Geelong Grammar School at the time.

He embarked from Sydney on 30 April and docked in Southampton on 16 July 1918. Cuthbert was taken on strength / reinforcement as a Gunner with the 2nd Battery, although there is no record of Cuthbert going to France or ever serving in that capacity.

In October 1918 he applied to join the Royal Air Force and was accepted to train as a pilot at the school at Aeronautics in Oxford and appointed as a cadet. He was also based in Wendover and Tetbury in Oxfordshire.  On 1 April 1919, Cuthbert was appointed as a Lieutenant on Probation with the Australian Flying Corp.

He returned to Australia on the ship Leicestershire on 3 May 1919 and his appointment as Lieutenant and discharged on 6 July 1919 and his address at the time was recorded as Cavendish Victoria

Francis married Madeline Forbes at St Luke’s Anglican Church, Cottesloe on Wednesday 12 September 1934.

It appears he made himself available for service in WW2, up to 19/12/1944.
