64 years ago today, on the 11th March 1959, Private Cyril Francis Coleman, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2287), plasterer's labourer from 32 Phoebe Street, Islington, New South Wales and 2 William Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 61. CATHOLIC 1-22. 90.

Note – headstone inscription incorrectly states date of death as the 11th March, should be the 9th March 1959.
Born at Islington, New South Wales 1897 as Francis Cyril to John Michael and Margaret Coleman; husband of Nellie Coleman nee Hughes (married 1925, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 1927, sleeping here, 32 years a widower), Cyril enlisted on the 25th February 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 16.7.1917 (GSW left foot, slight).

Admitted to hospital 21.11.1917 (little toe to be amputated), 21.6.1918 (influenza), 28.1.1919 (not stated), 19.9.1919 (urethritis).

Cyril returned home on the 30th October 1919, being discharged on the 22nd December 1919.

Mr. Coleman’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board 1.

Older brother James Michael (born Armidale, New South Wales 10.12.1886, railway porter from 32 Elizabeth Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, married, enlisted 27.11.1915, 35th Battalion, Reg No-1092, RTA invalided 16.5.1919, laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery on the 3rd August 1968, age 81). CATHOLIC 3-93. 74. Wooden cross and plaque erected by owners, date unknown. New wooden cross erected - 12.3.2016.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at the Coleman gravesite in remembrance of Cyril’s service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
