Roy Harper was badly wounded in both legs during heavy shelling of the 40th Battalion trenches on 11 February 1917 near Armentieres. He died in a field ambulance the next day. His brother, 128 Pte. David Thomas Harper served with the Australian Flying Corps and was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal and another brother 5109 Pte. Reuben Henry Harper 52nd Battalion AIF was awarded a Military Medal for bravery in 1917.

They were the sons of Thomas Duncan and Elizabeth Harper, of Elderslie, Tasmania.
