From one end of the State to the other, and far beyond its boundaries, the news of tbe death of this gallant officer will be received with deep regret. The late Major Nicholas, who only returned from the front some 8 months ago, and had since been farming in the Manjimup district, went to Perth as a delegate to the Farmers and Settlers' Conference. He stopped in Perth after Conference concluded, and seemed in normal health until Tuesday morning last, when he was worried with a cough. He did not consider it necessary to obtain medical assistance', but during the same afternoon, his condition became so serious that it was necessary to remove him to the Perth Public Hospital. Whilst in the hospital, the symptoms intensified into those of influenza, and the patient died at 7 o'clock the following morning (Wednesday, the 20th inst).
The late officer had a brilliant military career. He enlisted in the famous 10th Light Horse shortly after the outbreak of war, and embarked With the regiment 1as a Captain in February, 1915. He was in charge of B Squadron. During the fighting in Gallipoli, he was wounded and sent to England for treatment. On his return to the front, he was temporiarly placed in charge of the regiment until it was taken over by the late Colonel T Todd. Later, upon his return to Egypt, he organised the 3rd Light Machine Gun Squadron and remained in charge until his embarkation for Australia. On his return, he resided for some time in Petth, and was a member of the R.S. A. Executive. During his residence on his farm, he was an active member of the Farmers and Settlers' Association.
The late Major Nicholas comes of a soldiering family ; his three surviving brothers have each seen active service, and their sister was a member of the Army Nursing Staff in Egypt.
