Joseph Thomas Miller was the son of John and Catherine Miller, of Mount Miller, Cassilis, New South Wales.

His older brother, 1970 Pte Walter James Miller 17th Battalion AIF, returned to Australia 15 February 1918. He died on 17 July 1922 as a result of gas poisoning, aged 42.

Joseph joined the 19th Battalion in France on 3 December 1916. Five months later he received a gunshot wound to the face and neck on the 15 of April 1917. He died of his wounds the next day, aged 27 years.
