From How We Served

The final resting place for; - 3733 Private Jeremiah Joseph McCarthy of Adelaide, South Australia had been employed as a labourer prior to his enlisting for War Service. Allocated to reinforcements for the 16th battalion 1st AIF Jeremiah was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 2nd of December 1915 and following his arrival he was transferred over to the 48th Battalion and then to the 4th Pioneers, with which he would embark for France with, arriving on the 11th of June 1916.

Serving continuously Jeremiah was evacuated sick to hospital at Etaples on the 10th of April 1918 suffering from chronic rheumatism and shortly after his being admitted he was sent on to England for further hospitalisation and was deemed to be unfit for further service in the trenches, Jeremiah was classed as an invalid and commenced his repatriation back to Australia, departing England on the 6th of June and following his arrival back in Adelaide he received his formal discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 4th of October 1918.

Jerimiah would continue to suffer from the effects of rheumatism, and shortly afterwards he as well suffered a phycological breakdown which would see him admitted into the Yarra Bend Asylum, Victoria and shortly after this he was admitted into the Military Mental Asylum (Mont Park) on the 16th of March 1922. Jeremiah would receive ongoing treatment from both the Military Asylum and from the Macleod Military Sanatorium, and was still in the residence of the asylum where he was being treated for what was now cited as General Paralysis of the Insane, when his death occurred on the 14th of July 1924.
