William Francis Hayman

Born 1st Feb 1895 Quorn, South Australia
Son of William Timothy Joseph Hayman and Julia Elizabeth Chapman.
On 1st August the Base records office of A Company Battallion had receive a gunshot would in the head while in action at Armentieres, France and was dangerously ill. He had enslisted from Musswellbrooke and served for seven or eight months in Egypt before going to France. He died of wounds on 27th August 1916 London.

Died on this date – 27th August…… William Francis Hayman was born at Quorn, South Australia on 1st February, 1895.

His mother - Julia Elizabeth Hayman died on 13th October, 1899 at Georgetown, South Australia.

William Timothy Hayman, father of William Francis Hayman, died on 15th May, 1901 at Norwood, South Australia.

William Francis Hayman was schooled at Boys Home, Kincumber, Woy Woy, New south Wales. From information provided by his brother for the Roll of Honour – “He lost both his parents when 6 yrs of age & has one only brother who survives him.”

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 2nd August, 1915 as a 20 year old, single, Farm Hand from Muswellbrook, New South Wales.

Private William Francis Hayman, Service number 192, embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on HMAT Beltana (A72 ) on 9th November, 1915 with the 8th Infantry Brigade, 30th Infantry Battalion “A” Company & disembarked at  Suez on 11th December, 1915.

On 16th June, 1916 Private Hayman embarked from Alexandria on Hororata to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force). He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 23rd June, 1916.

Private William Francis Hayman was wounded in action in France on 20th July, 1916. He was admitted to 1st Casualty Clearing Station on 20th July, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Skull then transferred to No. 1 Ambulance Train. Private Hayman was admitted to 13th General Hospital at Boulogne, France on 20th July, 1916. He was invalided to England on 11th August, 1916 on Hospital Ship St Denis.

He was admitted to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, England on 12th August, 1916 with shrapnel wound/s to Head - severe. He was reported to be seriously ill on 23rd August, 1916 with G.S.W to Head & Hemiplegia.

Private William Francis Hayman died on 27th August, 1916 at King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London, England from wounds received in action in France – G.S.W. Head.

He was buried in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Kensal Green, London, England where 14 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
