Harold was the only son and third of six children of Joseph Crombie (born 1848 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Jeanette (Janette) Martin (born 1847 in Prospect, South Australia). Joseph and Jeanette married in 1872 in North Adelaide, South Australia and all six children were born there. The family moved to Queensland where Joseph was Dairy Farming at Pimpama near Southport.

Harold worked initially at Endcliffe Vale in Pimpama as a Dairyman for his father before becoming a Horsebreaker. Following a short stint as a Storkeeper in Moggill, QLD, Harold married Martha Mary Perrett (born 1888 in Ipswich, QLD) in Ipswich. marhta had worked as a Telephone Assistant in Bundamba, Ipswich, QLD.

Harold was Horse Breaking in Bundamba, Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in February 1916, He served as a Private (Service No: 1899) with 49th Infantry Battalion. Harold was WiA in France in 1917 and was Discharged in 1919.

Following his Discharge, Harry and Martha settled in Ipswich where Harry worked as a Contractor, on occasions taking work in the Wide Bay Region of QLD. In 1928 Harold was a Hotel Proprietor in Nanango in Wide Bay, QLD and by 1931 Harold and his family were living in Bald Hills in Brisbane, QLD where Harold was Proprietor of the Railway Hotel until 1935. Harold and his family moved to Sandgate in QLD where he was a Shopkeeper until retirement in 1949. Harold died in 1952 and Martha in 1964
