Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

93 years ago today, on the Friday afternoon of the 14th November 1930, Private David Thompson Tripney, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-3192), labourer from 25 Dibbs Street, Adamstown, New South Wales and Bailey Street, Adamstown, N.S.W. and Pelican Flat, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 43. METHODIST 3 (UNITING)-F. 14.

Born at Emerald, Queensland about 1887 to David, died 3.12.1912, of 25 Dibbs Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., age 76, METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 5 SW. 58  and Margaret Tripney nee Brown, died 1.9.1915, of 25 Dibbs Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., age 73, METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 5 SW. 56; husband of Maud Elizabeth Tripney nee Roach (married 1927, New Lambton, N.S.W., remarried 1933 to Peter E Anderson, Wickham, N.S.W., died?). David enlisted on the 3rd July 1916 at Broadmeadow, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.
Sustained hernia on the 13th April 1917 at No. 4 Training Camp.

Commenced return to Australia 4.5.1917.

Service record gives no indication of War Medals awarded.

David returned home on the 6th July 1917, being discharged medically unfit (hernia) on the 14th August 1917.

Mr. Tripney’s name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial, Adamstown Municipal District Roll of Honor, Adamstown Methodist Church

The tragic circumstances of David’s death were reported (see link). See coroner's report states that haemorrhage developed after the strain of lifting coal at the John Darling Colliery.

I have placed poppies at David’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.

Older brother Adam Brown (born about 1877 at Linlithgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, labourer from 25 Dibbs Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., enlisted 11.7.1916, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, Reg No-3191, RTA 22.11.1917, was not granted Victory Medal, died 21.10.1938, age 61, not officially commemorated) also resting at the cemetery, METHODIST 4-11. 13.
