Let us remember a Fallen Original Anzac of The Great War memorialised at Mimi Cemetery, N.S.W.

On the 24th July 1916, Sergeant Joseph Henry Winterbottom, 2nd Battalion (Reg No-575), gas service layer (Newcastle Gas & Coke Company, Ltd), from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, New South Wales, Died of Wounds at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, France, 30 years 11 months. Battle of Pozieres.

Born at Helensburgh, New South Wales on the 3rd August 1885 to John Thomas, (died 22.11.1918, Minmi, N.S.W., age 62, buried at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 02, Plot 053, from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, N.S.W., and Janet T Winterbottom nee Hunter, died 20.4.1912, Minmi, N.S.W., age 47, mother of 5, sleeping at Minmi Cemetery, N.S.W., Right Hand Side, Section 02, Plot 053, from "Bonnie Doon", Maitland Road, Minmi, N.S.W., Joe enlisted on the 17th August 1914, age 29 years, at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board Transport A23 Suffolk on the 18th October 1914.

Disembarked Alexandria, Egypt 2.12.1914.

Landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula, (Anzac Cove), on the Sunday of the 25th April 1915. His rifle prowess made him a sniper.

Admitted to hospital 25.7.1915 (dysentery).

Promoted to Corporal 28.11.1915.

Promoted to Sergeant 25.1.1916.

Joe was one of the players from the Northern Branch Rugby League (Central Newcastle) who had gone to the front.

Granted leave to England from 25.6.1916 to 5.7.1916.
Wounded in action 23.7.1916 - (GSW abdomen).

Place of Association - Minmi, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Winterbottom name has been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial, Minmi Roll of Honour, Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Newcastle Gas & Coke Company Limited Roll of Honor.

Poppies have been placed at the Winterbottom memorialised gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Joe for God, King & Country. Right Hand Side, Section 02, Plot 053.
