Allan Colin Ross of Croyden, New South Wales, came from a fighting family. His father, Private George Ross enlisted in the 1st Battalion at 47 years of age in 1916 and served overseas.
Allan also had three older brothers who served. Lieutenant Frank Gordon Ross of 1st Division Artillery died of wounds in France during November 1916, aged 25. Another brother, Sergeant Major George Lynwood Ross also served in the Artillery, was wounded in 1917 and returned to Australia in 1919. Another brother, Driver Kenneth Douglas Ross also served in the 1st Division Artillery.
Allan was twice wounded during his service with the 4th Battalion, and the second wound in January 1918 resulted in a severely fractured elbow from shrapnel, which saw Allan Ross being returned to Australia early during April 1918.
He married in 1925, raised three children and was still working as a railway employee in Croydon in 1936. Allan passed away in 1973, at 75 years of age.
