Son of John Vallender and Rebecca Vallender nee Blackburn of 'Ryan's Creek', Benalla, Victoria. Brother of John Vallender who returned to Australia on 23 March 1919 having served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 May 1919 aboard HT Soudan disembarking on 29 June 1919
