Henry John Dalzell was born in Rozelle, Leichhardt, New South Wales, Australia in 1896 (2). Dalzell was raised by father, Henry Dalzell and mother, Ellen Dalzell. Dalzell attended primary and secondary school, first in Rozelle Public School and later, Sydney Technical High School (3). His religion was Roman Catholic. Before enlisting, Dalzell's occupation was driver (4).
Dalzell enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on the 22nd June 1917 at the age of 21 and 7 months(5). Dalzell was ranked private in the 34th Infantry Battalion. He embarked on 16 July 1917, on the HMAT Port Melbourne A16 (7).
On 11 May 1918 Dalzell was pronounced missing in action as he was taken POW during the German Spring offensive, a series of attacks on the Western Front involving heavy artillery barrages. During this time, Dalzell suffered an unidentified injury (9). Fortunately, Dalzell survived this encounter. He was repatriated to England on 31 December 1918, where he recovered before finally returning to Australia on 5 April 1919 (10).
Once Dalzell returned to Australia, he married Jessica Turner in 1920 at the age of 21 (11). Soon after, his father, Henry Dalzell passed away on 12th April 1921 (12). Dalzell worked as a labourer in Glebe, Balmain North during 1930 (13). Later, Dalzell remarried to Beryl Joyce Middleton in 1945, in Canterbury. From 1949 to 1977, Dalzell worked various jobs throughout wider Sydney. The first of these jobs was as a laboratory assistant in Ashfield during 1949 (14). In 1954, Dalzell worked as a labourer in Clovelly and then, as a broadcast technician in Naremburm (15). During 1958, Dalzell performed as a minister in 1958 (16). Finally, Dalzell switched to working as a clergyman in 1963, Boolaroo (17). He continued performing the occupation of clergyman in 1977, NSW, Toronto (18). It was unknown when exactly Dalzell passed away but his last recorded occupation states he was at minimum, the age of 81. Dalzell is commemorated on the Ballarat Australian Ex-Prisoners of War Memorial and the Sydney Technical High School WW1 Roll Of Honour (22).
