Recommendation date: 9 March 1917

"For gallant and distinguished services in the Field."

"At Zenith Trench, Corporal Longstaff, under heavy artillery fire on the night of the 8th/9th December 1916 took a machine gun into No Man's Land and covered the advance of a raiding party. Althought severly wounded, he contined at his post until the raid was over. He has previously shown considerable skill and enterprise, and his courage is undoubted. On the previous night he reconnoitred and selected position for the gun."
