Enlisted and served as Vane De Heriz
Vane was born as Walter Vane Smith DE HERIZ in Hope Bagot, Salop, Ludlow, England in 1879
His parents were the Reverend Lionel Forbes Vane Smith DE HERIZ and Hannah Maria GILES who married in Ludlow in 1871
He enlisted in Holsworthy, NSW on 5th October, 1915 and embarked with the 18th Infantry Battalion, 12th reinforcements from Sydney on the HMAT Ceramic on 13th April, 1916
He died in the 31st General Hospital on 23rd May, 1916 of haemmorhage and embolism after cutting his throad in a suicide attempt - he is buried in the Port Said Memorial Cemetery
Four sons from this family served during WW1 and 3 lost their lives - they served in English Regiments
