Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

The tragic story of a Forgotten Digger of The Great War resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

89 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 11th July 1932, Private Arthur Henry Mason, 7th Battalion (Reg No-6788), labourer from Drouin, Gippsland, Victoria and Tighes Hill, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 34. GENERAL-34A. 14.

Born at Gippsland, Victoria about 1898 to ? and Sarah Mason, Arthur enlisted October 1916 at Cootamundra, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital - 31.1.1917 (bronchitis), 4.7.1917 (fractured jaw, accidental).

Arthur returned home November 1917, being discharged on the 6th February 1918.
Did not receive Victory Medal.

The tragic circumstances of Mr. Mason’s death were reported. He was a returned soldier who died in  Newcastle Hospital, destitute and without known rel
atives or friends in the district,

I placed a cross adorned with poppies at Arthur’s unmarked gravesite April 2019, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I submitted an application to DVA May 2019 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to be installed at Mr Mason’s gravesite, unfortunately this was declined July 2019.

Honour and Dignity will be restored to Arthur with a Plaque courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.

Lest We Forget.
