STEVENSON Joseph Henry 2258 PTE

Joe and his younger brother Jack enlisted together on 14 July 1915, just as their elder brothers, Jim and Bill had done a little over a year before. Joe was 29 and Jack was two years younger.

They were both drafted into the 21st Battalion, 4th reinforcements. In September, after preliminary training at Broadmeadows camp they embarked on HMAT Hororata for Alexandria; thence to Tel-el-Kebir for operations against the Turks, defending the Suez Canal.

On 19 March 1916 they embarked on SS Minnewaska bound for Marseilles from where they entrained to northern France. In July and August they were engaged in carrying duties at Pozieres. They remained at the Front near Ypres from September until the advance on Bapaume in March 1917.

On 20 March, not far from Bapaume, Joe was killed.

He is buried at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Cemetery.

A Memorial Scroll and Plaque were sent to his father in 1921
