From Steven Figg

My great-great uncle Pte Roy Harold Figg aka McDermott 1892-c1919 of the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion. The 13th became part of the 4th Brigade when he arrived in Egypt in 1915; the 4th Brigade landed at Gallipoli during the first afternoon of the campaign on 25 Apr 1915; on 29 May 1915 Roy was advancing to attack the enemy; he was shot in the lower third of his left leg, resulting in a compound fracture to his tibia and fibula. Roy was transferred to the Deaconess’ Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt on 2 Jun 1915; he was then transferred to a hospital in Greece on 7 Jun 1915 before embarking on the hospital ship ‘Delta’ bound for England on 2 Jul 1915.

Roy spent time convalescing at a hospital in Manchester, England in mid-July 1915 and Woodcote Park, Epsom, Surrey in August 1915; even at this stage it was recommended by his doctors that he be ‘discharged as permanently unfit for war service and for service at home’; he was also admitted to the Verne Military Hospital in Portland, Dorset, England on 25 Sep 1915 and the Bulford Hospital, Wiltshire, England on 15 Oct 1915 where he was treated for gonorrhea.

Roy embarked at Portland, Dorset to return home to Australia per the transport ship ‘Runic’ on 7 Nov 1915; he arrived in Melbourne on 21 Dec 1915, almost a year to the day after his departure from Australia.
