Arthur was the eldest of seven children of Frederick Charles Crole (born 1873 in Healesville, Victoria) and Martha Helena Phillips (born 1875 in Emerald, Victoria). Fred and Martha married in 1895 in Bloomfield Victoria, where Fred was a Labourer. They moved briefly to Bunbury in WA where tow children were born. The family moved back to Victoria, and then to Trowutta in Tasmania.

Arthur was working on the family farm in 1915 when he enlisted (with his parents' permission) in the AIF as a Private (Service No:1225) with 26 and 69 Battalions. He was in France when his father was KIA in Belgium, and his mother requested that he return home to support her and the other children. Arthur's father Fred enlisted in the AIF in 1916 (Service No: 364); brother Ronald Henry served in WWII (Service No: QX44940/Q140253); Brothers - in - Law Louis Henry Allan Miller (Service No: TX6742) and Edward Lou Greenberg (Service No: TX5998) served in WWII, and nephews Fred Whish - Wilson (Service No: T6595) and Cosmo Whish - Wilson (Service No: 88087) also served in WWII. Arthur's son - Frederick Charles (Service No: TX14799/T102580) served in WWII and son Lawrence Viyan (Service No: A6285) served in Korea. 

From 1942 to 1944 Arthur served in the Australian Army Volunteer Defence Corps 4 Battalion as a Private (Service No: T23419).

Arthur returned to Tasmania where he managed the farm and in 1924 married Helena Augusta Mary Whish - Wilson (born 1903 in Ringarooma, Tasmania). Arthur and Helena remained in Trowutta in Tasmania where Arthur was Farm Manager until his death in 1972. Helena died in 1995
