William Compton
William was born in Proserpine to William Archer & Mary Ann (Jenkins) in 26.3.1895. He enlisted in Proserpine on 13.3.1915 and embarked from Sydney on 9.8.1915 aboard "Runic" bound for Egypt. Served as a Driver with the Australian Army Corps in Egypt from 1916 to 1919. He was hospitalised with an injury on 20.4.1917 & for numerous bouts of malaria.
While in England he was selected to be on guard at Buckingham Palace, He returned to Australia on 8.9.1919, William married Lilah Jean Gordon on 27.12.1921 & they resided in Bowen till 1930 when they returned to Proserpine. William passed away on 26.1.1986 at the age of 90 years.
