Biography

"...2215 Private (Pte) Stanley Sylvester Welsh, 4th Reinforcements, A Company, 24th Battalion, of Ballarat East, Vic. Pte Welsh enlisted on 15 July 1915 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Hororata on 27 September 1915. He was wounded at Pozieres and returned to his unit in France after nine months. Pte Welsh was promoted to corporal the evening before going into battle. He was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Passchendaele, Belgium." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)

Son of Oliver and Augusta WELSH, of 79 Barkley Street, Ballarat East, Vic.

Stanley Welsh (SN 2215) was born in Stawell, attending the Stawell State School then the Sebastopol State School. He was a 20-year-old, single, Salesman when he enlisted in the 24th Battalion, 4th Reinforcements, on 16th July 1915. He had already served four years in Senior Cadets, and Citizen Military Forces. His unit embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A20 Hororata on 27th September 1915. He reached France in March 1916 and on 12th August 1916 he was wounded with a gunshot wound to the back and left shoulder at Pozieres and was evacuated to hospital in England. After nine months he rejoined his unit, but on 4th October 1917 he was killed in action at Messines. With no known grave, he is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. His brothers, Leonard and Thomas also served.
