Son of Michael Simmons and Alice Simmons nee Ryan of 105 Gilbert Street, Adelaide, SA. Brother of Amy Mary Simmons and John Francis Simmons who lowered his age to enlist. John returned to Australia on 1 April 1919 having served with the 43rd Battalion
Received "Order of the Way" from the Divisional Commander commending Sergeant Simmons for carrying out a most daring reconaissance in the face of very heavy machine gun fire near Haut Allaines on 2 September 1918.
