A Forgotten Digger who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
88 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 6th May 1936, Private James Hutchinson Donald (aka MacDonald), 30th Battalion (Reg No-2387), coal trimmer from 129 Bull Street, Cooks Hill, Newcastle, New South Wales and 99 Railway Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 49?. PRESBYTERIAN-14NW. 47.
Referred to as Scotty McDonald and Macdonald.
Born at Dundee, Scotland about 1885 or 1887 to ? and ?; husband of Annie Donald (Macdonald) nee? (married?, died 19.8.1939?, Wickham, N.S.W., as MACDONALD), Scotty enlisted on the 21st September 1915 (as James MACDONALD) at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A67 Orsova on the 11th March 1916.
Admitted to hospital 25.4.1916 (dysentery), 11.7.1916 (cystitis, right eye), 29.5.1917 (dacryocystitis - infection of the tear sac (lacrimal sac) in the inner corner of your eye).
Granted furlough from the 22.9.1916 to the 13.10.1916.
Commenced return to Australia 10.9.1917.
Scotty arrived home on the 13th November 1917, being discharged medically unfit (ophthalmia - inflammation of the eye) on the 6th March 1918.
I have not located Mr. Donald’s name inscribed on any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.

I erected a cross adorned with poppies April 2024 at Scotty’s unmarked gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
