Pte 3990 Joseph Patrick Harris was born at Talbot on 4 September 1873. His father was Henry Walpole Harris. Both of Joseph's parents died when their children were young, and they were placed in the Ballarat Orphanage.

Enlisting as a 41 year old in Maryborough on 13 July 1915, he died of a gunshot wound to the chest on 25 July 1916, and was buried at Puchevillers Cemetery, France.

A tree was later planted for Joseph Patrick Harris in the Ballarat Orphanage's "Arthur Kenny Avenue of Honour".
